The 4 Nights 5 Days Darjeeling Tour covers everything the shorter trips do. It adds a full day out to Mirik and its lake, which makes it the most unhurried of the three.
The 4 Nights 5 Days Darjeeling Tour adds the one thing the shorter itineraries cannot fit: a whole day away from the town. Mirik sits about 49 km off at roughly 1,495 m, built around a lake with a walking path right round it, and the drive there runs through some of the best tea country in the district.
The rest of the trip is the full Darjeeling programme at a pace that allows for weather. With four nights you can move the sunrise attempt if the forecast is poor, which on a two-night trip is simply not possible.
Met at Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri and driven up through Kurseong, about three hours. The evening is free — Chowrasta and Mall Road are a short level walk from most hotels.
A pre-dawn run to Tiger Hill at roughly 2,590 m, returning via the Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery, then the steam joyride to Ghum after breakfast. Both are weather-dependent and the train needs booking well ahead.
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the zoological park in the morning, then the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre and the Japanese Peace Pagoda, timed for the evening prayers.
About 49 km southwest through the tea gardens to Mirik at roughly 1,495 m. There is a level path right round Sumendu Lake, boating on it, and a pine avenue along one shore. The drop in altitude makes it noticeably warmer than Darjeeling.
Happy Valley Tea Estate in the morning, then down to Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri with a three-hour cushion before your flight or train.
Exact inclusions are confirmed in your written quotation. If something matters to you and is not listed, ask before you book.
October and November are the best months overall, and the extra night makes them even more valuable because a clouded sunrise can be attempted again.
March to May suits this itinerary particularly well: Mirik is warm, the tea gardens are in flush and the hillsides are flowering. December is bright and very quiet. The monsoon is workable here, since Mirik and the indoor sights do not depend on a view.
The commonest variation is to replace the Mirik day with a transfer to Kalimpong for the last two nights, which gives a bigger change of scene. Some travellers instead use day four for the Rock Garden and a slow morning at Chowrasta, which makes this the gentlest itinerary we offer in these hills.
If you have five days, yes. It is about two hours each way, and the point is the change of pace rather than a list of sights — a level walk round the lake, pine avenues and tea gardens on the drive. If you would rather have another day in Darjeeling itself, we will happily rearrange it.
Yes, and for some travellers it is the better trip. Kalimpong needs an overnight rather than a day trip, so the itinerary becomes three nights in Darjeeling and one or two in Kalimpong. Tell us early, since it changes the hotel bookings.
We try again on a later morning. That is the practical advantage of four nights over two, and it is why we suggest this length to anyone travelling in a less reliable season. There is no guarantee even so, but two attempts are considerably better than one.
Only if you dislike staying still. Four nights in one hotel with one day out is an unhurried trip rather than a thin one, and most people use the spare hours at Chowrasta. If you would rather cover more ground, adding Kalimpong or Sikkim is the better use of the time.

DarjeelingA shorter route: 3 nights across Darjeeling, Tiger Hill, Ghoom, tea gardens.
