Day 1: Arrival and the Drive to Darjeeling

Met at Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri and driven up through Kurseong, roughly three hours through the tea gardens. Nothing scheduled afterwards.

Chowrasta and Mall Road in the evening — level walking, bookshops and benches, and the easiest possible first hour in the town.

Day 2: Tiger Hill Sunrise and the Toy Train

An early start for Tiger Hill at roughly 2,590 m, returning via the Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery. Warm layers matter more than you expect at that hour.

After breakfast, the steam joyride between Darjeeling and Ghum on the nineteenth-century hill railway. Seats are limited and booked well in advance, and services can be cancelled for weather or maintenance.

Day 3: Institutions and the Peace Pagoda

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park share a hillside site — allow most of a morning and expect to be walking on a slope.

In the afternoon the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre, where the workshops are still producing, then the Japanese Peace Pagoda in time for the evening prayers.

Day 4: Tea Estate and Departure

Happy Valley Tea Estate in the morning, with the factory usually working in season, then down to the plains allowing a three-hour cushion before your flight or train.

Toy train seats sell out in season and are booked through Indian Railways. We will try to secure them, but availability is outside our control and services can be cancelled at short notice.
No permits are needed. Indian nationals need photo identification for check-in; foreign nationals need passport and visa.
The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre is usually closed on Sundays, so day three may be reordered depending on which day of the week you arrive.
Tiger Hill is weather-dependent, and the approach road operates a managed vehicle system rather than open access.
Journey times are typical rather than guaranteed, and hill itineraries depend on road and weather conditions. If a day has to change we rearrange it and tell you why.

Best Time for This Darjeeling Tour

October and November are the strongest months — clear air, reliable roads and the best chance of a good sunrise. March to May brings mild days, flowering hillsides and the first and second tea flush, which makes the estate visit more interesting.

December is cold and bright with excellent visibility. The monsoon months are green, quiet and inexpensive, but the mountain views are unreliable and the toy train is more prone to cancellation.

The usual addition is a fourth night for a day out to Mirik, which turns this into the five-day itinerary. Travellers going on to Kalimpong often keep three nights here and add two there instead, which gives a better contrast than a fourth day in the same town.

Is the toy train ride guaranteed?

No. The steam joyride between Darjeeling and Ghum is popular, seats are limited and booking is through Indian Railways. We book as early as we can once your dates are confirmed, and services are occasionally cancelled for weather or maintenance. If it cannot run we rearrange the morning.

How is this different from the 2 Nights 3 Days Darjeeling Tour?

One extra full day, which is what makes room for the toy train, the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre and the Peace Pagoda. On the shorter trip those three have to be dropped, and the tea estate competes with the departure drive.

Can we visit a tea estate factory?

Usually, in season. Happy Valley is the closest to town and the factory is generally working during the plucking flushes, broadly March to May and again later in the year. Outside those periods the factory may be idle, though the garden itself is still worth walking.

What if it rains for the whole trip?

Darjeeling still works — the monasteries, the institute, the museums, the Tibetan centre and the tea estate are all fine in poor weather. What suffers is Tiger Hill and the long views. We will reorder days to put the outdoor ones where the forecast is best.
