The 2 Nights 3 Days Darjeeling Tour is deliberately unambitious on day one. The drive up from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri takes around three hours on a winding hill road, and cramming sightseeing on to the end of it is how short trips here go wrong.

So the plan is simple: arrive and settle, give the whole of day two to the sunrise run and the main sights, and use the last morning for the tea estate before descending. It covers what most first-time visitors come for, and it does not pretend three days is four.

Day 1: Bagdogra or NJP to Darjeeling

Met on arrival and driven up through Kurseong and the tea gardens — usually about three hours, longer in holiday traffic or heavy rain. Check in and rest.

In the evening, walk up to Chowrasta and along Mall Road. It is the one level stretch in Darjeeling and the best possible introduction at the end of a travel day.

Day 2: Tiger Hill, Ghoom and the Institutions

A start in the dark, usually around four in the morning, for the sunrise at Tiger Hill at roughly 2,590 m. What you see depends entirely on the weather, and nobody can promise a clear morning. Take a warm layer more than you think you need.

On the way back, the Batasia Loop and Ghoom Monastery. After breakfast and a rest, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, which share a hillside site and a ticket.

Day 3: Tea Estate and Departure

Happy Valley Tea Estate in the morning, close enough to town to walk to if you are feeling energetic. In season the factory is usually working, which is what makes the visit worth doing.

Then down to Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri, allowing a three-hour cushion before your flight or train.

No permits are needed for Darjeeling. Indian nationals should carry photo identification for hotel check-in; foreign nationals need passport and visa.
Tiger Hill is entirely weather-dependent and vehicle numbers on the approach road are managed, so the run is arranged in advance rather than decided on the morning.
The toy train joyride is not included on this itinerary — there is no spare morning for it. It can be added if you extend to three nights.
Darjeeling is steep. Both the zoo and the Peace Pagoda involve walking on slopes rather than level ground.

Best Time for This Darjeeling Tour

October and November give the clearest air and the best odds of a good Tiger Hill sunrise, which matters more on a short trip where there is no second attempt.

March to May is mild and green, with afternoon cloud common. December is cold, bright and quiet with excellent visibility. The monsoon, from June to September, often hides the mountain entirely.

Why is nothing scheduled on the first day?

Because the drive up takes about three hours on a winding hill road, and arrival times slip. Adding sightseeing to the end of that day is how short Darjeeling trips become exhausting. The evening at Chowrasta is level, close and takes as long as you want it to.

Will we see Kangchenjunga from Tiger Hill?

Possibly. The viewpoint is open all year but the mountain is not always visible. October to early December offers the best chance; in the monsoon it is often hidden for days. We will take you up, but we will not sell the sunrise as a certainty.

Can the toy train be added to this tour?

Is Darjeeling difficult for older travellers?
