3 Nights 4 Days Sikkim Tour Overview

The 3 Nights 4 Days Sikkim Tour is the shortest itinerary we are willing to call a Sikkim trip rather than a transfer. It works because it does not move you: one hotel in Gangtok for all three nights, so the two full days in the middle are spent seeing things.

Day two stays low and gentle around the capital. Day three is the one that climbs — east to Tsomgo Lake at roughly 3,753 m and back down the same afternoon. Putting the altitude day third rather than second is deliberate; it gives you a night at 1,650 m to settle first.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Bagdogra or NJP to Gangtok

We meet you at the airport or the station and drive up the Teesta valley on NH10. The road follows the river most of the way and the climb is gradual — usually four to five hours, though we would not treat that as a promise in the monsoon.

The rest of the day is deliberately empty. Check in, rest, and walk down to MG Marg in the evening if you feel like it.

Day 2: Gangtok Sightseeing

A full but unhurried day around the capital. Rumtek Monastery sits about 24 km out on a ridge facing the town and takes the morning — carry photo identification, as the complex is security-checked.

In the afternoon, the Do-Drul Chorten with its ring of prayer wheels, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and a ridge viewpoint. The ropeway is an easy optional addition if it is clear.

Day 3: Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir

An early start east on the Jawaharlal Nehru road to Tsomgo Lake at roughly 3,753 m, then on to Baba Mandir if your permit covers it. You gain more than two kilometres of altitude in a morning, so the stops at the top are kept short.

Tell your driver early if you feel unwell — we turn back rather than push on. Access depends on the permit and the weather, and neither is guaranteed.

Day 4: Gangtok to Bagdogra or NJP

Back down the valley in time for an afternoon flight or train. We ask for a four-hour cushion before departure — NH10 can be delayed after heavy rain, and occasionally closed altogether.

For an early flight we usually suggest coming down the previous evening.

Best Time for This Sikkim Tour

October and November give the clearest views and the most reliable road east, which matters a great deal on a trip with only one high day in it. March to May is the next best window — mild and flowering, though afternoons cloud over.

In December and February the Tsomgo road becomes unpredictable in snow, so treat that day as optional. The monsoon is cheap and green, with a real risk of delay on NH10.

Customize This Sikkim Trip

The commonest change is to add a night and turn this into a five-day trip with Rumtek and the town split across two calmer days. The second is to swap the Tsomgo day for a run out to Ravangla and Namchi, which keeps you low and suits travellers who would rather not go above three thousand metres at all.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nathu La included in the 3 Nights 4 Days Sikkim Tour?

No. Nathu La needs its own permit, is open to Indian nationals only and closes on certain days and at short notice for weather. On a trip this short there is no second chance if it is shut, so we do not build it in. It can be requested as an add-on to the Tsomgo day and we will tell you honestly what the odds are.

For Gangtok and one high day, yes. It is not enough for north Sikkim or west Sikkim, and trying to add either turns the trip into a series of long drives. If you have six days or more, the longer itineraries are a much better use of them.

We rearrange the day. Depending on conditions that usually means a run south towards Ravangla, or a fuller day around Gangtok including the ropeway and Banjhakri Falls. The permit fee is not charged if the permit is not issued.

Yes, with one caveat: the Tsomgo day combines fast altitude gain with a long vehicle day, which small children often find hard. Many families replace day three with a lower excursion, and we are happy to plan it that way.
