Places to Visit in Kalimpong: Best Attractions & Himalayan Views

The places to visit in Kalimpong sit on a lower, warmer ridge east of the Teesta. Viewpoints, monasteries and the flower nurseries the town is known for are all a short drive from the bazaar.

The places to visit in Kalimpong sit on a ridge at roughly 1,250 m, east of the Teesta and about eight hundred metres lower than Darjeeling. That difference in altitude is the whole character of the town: warmer, greener, less crowded, and far easier on anyone who finds the high hill stations hard work.

Kalimpong was a trading post on the route to Tibet long before it became a destination, and something of that still shows — in the monasteries above the town, in the bazaar, and in the nurseries that grew out of a nineteenth-century interest in Himalayan plants. Wool, musk and borax came down this way by mule train, and the town that handled them was cosmopolitan long before it was picturesque.

Almost everything worth seeing is within twenty minutes of the centre, which is why Kalimpong works so well as a two-night stop. You can see it properly without spending either day in a vehicle.

The main sights

Best Places to Visit in Kalimpong

Seven places that between them fill a comfortable day and a half.

Deolo Hill

The highest point in Kalimpong at roughly 1,704 m, laid out as a park with lawns, a garden and a viewpoint that takes in the town below, the Relli valley and — on a clear day — the snow line to the north. It is a short walk from the car park to the best of the view.

Durpin Dara

Durpin, at about 1,372 m, means spyglass — the hill was used as a lookout, and it still works as one. The ridge looks down over the Teesta and Relli rivers on one side and towards the Himalaya on the other, and it holds the town’s most important monastery.

Zang Dhok Palri Phodang

The monastery on Durpin Dara, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976. It holds a set of Tibetan scriptures carried out of Tibet, and the upper floor opens on to a terrace with the best framed view in Kalimpong. Remove your shoes and keep photography to the exterior unless told otherwise.

Tharpa Choling Monastery

A Gelug monastery founded in the early twentieth century on the slope above the town, quieter and less visited than Durpin. Worth the detour if you want somewhere to sit rather than another viewpoint to photograph.

Pine View Nursery

Kalimpong’s nurseries are a genuine local industry rather than a tourist attraction that grew a gift shop, and Pine View holds one of the largest cactus and succulent collections in the region. Even if plants are not your thing, the scale of it is worth twenty minutes.

Dr Graham's Homes

Founded in 1900 by the Reverend John Anderson Graham on the slopes below Deolo, this is still a working school, and its stone chapel and scattered cottages are among the most distinctive buildings in the hills. The grounds are usually open to visitors; the school itself is not, so keep to the paths.

Mangal Dham

A Hindu temple completed in 1993 in memory of Guru Mangaldasji, set in quiet gardens below the town. The architecture is modern and unusual for the hills, and the grounds are unhurried in a way the viewpoints are not.

Why go

Why Add Kalimpong to a Himalayan Itinerary?

Kalimpong is the obvious answer to a problem most hill itineraries have: too many high viewpoints in a row. Dropping to 1,250 m for two nights changes the temperature, the pace and the crowd, and it sits conveniently between Darjeeling, Gangtok and Siliguri.

Seasons

Best Time to Visit Kalimpong

The lower altitude widens the useful season considerably compared with Darjeeling.

Spring

March to May. The nurseries are at their best and orchids flower. Warm days, comfortable evenings, occasional afternoon cloud.

Monsoon

June to September. Heavy rain and landslide risk on the Teesta road, which is the main approach. Travel is possible but needs slack in the plan.

Autumn

October and November. Clear air, the best mountain views of the year and pleasant temperatures. The busiest period, though still quiet by Darjeeling standards.

Winter

December to February. Cool rather than cold, bright, and very quiet. A good choice for travellers who find Darjeeling in January too much.

Getting there

Darjeeling to Kalimpong Travel

The two towns are close on a map and separated by a river gorge, which is the part that decides the timing.

Road conditions and journey times are covered in more detail on our Darjeeling and Kalimpong travel information page, and current West Bengal tourism guidance is published by West Bengal Tourism. If you are combining Kalimpong with the hills above it, the 4 Nights 5 Days Darjeeling Tour is the easiest itinerary to extend.

Questions

Kalimpong Travel FAQs

How many days do you need in Kalimpong?

Two nights is the natural length. That gives you one full day for Deolo, Durpin Dara and the monasteries, and a second morning for the nurseries and Mangal Dham before moving on. A single night works if Kalimpong is a stop between Gangtok and Darjeeling rather than a destination.

No. Kalimpong is in West Bengal, not Sikkim, and no Protected Area Permit applies. Indian nationals need nothing beyond ordinary photo identification for hotel check-in. Foreign nationals need their passport and visa, and should carry copies, but no special hill permit is required.

They do different jobs. Darjeeling has the railway, the tea history and the famous sunrise, and the crowds that come with them. Kalimpong sits lower and warmer, has far fewer visitors and rewards a slower pace. Most travellers with four or more nights are happiest doing both.

Around 50 km, which takes roughly two and a half to three hours on hill roads. The route drops steeply to the Teesta and climbs the other side, so it is slower than the distance suggests. From Siliguri it is about 70 km and a similar time.

It is one of the better hill destinations for them. At roughly 1,250 m the altitude is undemanding, the roads are gentler than the Sikkim high routes, and the main viewpoints can be reached by vehicle with only short walks at the top.
