Places to visit in West Sikkim

  1. Pelling

Located at the altitude of 7200 feet, Pelling is known for its natural beauty and panoramic views of the Mt. Kanchenjunga and is surrounded by lush green forests and waterfalls. Pelling is also a great base for trekking routes including the Dzongri trek, the Goechala trek and the Singalila trek.

  1. Pemayangtse Monastery

Built in the 17th century by Lhatsun Namkha Jigme a revered lama of the Nyingmapa order of Tibetan Buddhism. The name “Pemayangtse” means “perfect sublime lotus” in Tibetan and the monastery is considered one of the most important monasteries in Sikkim. It is the premier monastery of the Nyingma sect of Buddhism and is also a part of the “ta-tshang” or the “three revered monasteries of Sikkim”. Located on the hilltop overlooking the Pelling town and the Mt. Kanchenjunga it provides the most stunning view. The most notable feature of the monastery is the seven-tiered model of the Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) which is a masterpiece. It houses several ancient Buddhist scriptures and texts which are considered to be the invaluable treasures of the monastery. The Bumchu festival is one of the main festivals celebrated here. It is known for its stunning architecture, intricate woodwork and ancient Buddhist artifacts.

  1. Khecheopari Lake

Also known as the Khecheopari Holy Lake, is a sacred lake located in Pelling. It is situated in the altitude of 5600 feet and is considered one of the holiest lakes in Sikkim by both Buddhists and Hindus. According to the legends the lake is believed to be a wish-fulfilling lake and is said to have the power to wash sins. The lake is also considered to be a sacred pilgrimage site. The lake is surrounded by dense forests and hills and its crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding scenery creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere, the lake also an important bird-watching site and is home to a variety of migratory and resident birds including the Himalayan pied kingfisher, the white throated kingfisher and the red billed blue magpie.

  1. Singshore Bridge

The suspension bridge is located in West Sikkim, India. It is one of the highest bridges in Asia and is popular tourist destination in the region. The bridge spans across a deep a valley and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The bridge is located about 5 km from the town of Pelling and is accessible by road.

  1. Tashiding Monastery

Located in the district of West Sikkim, India. It is considered one of the most sacred and revered monasteries in Sikkim and is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The monastery was built in the 17th century by Ngadak Sempa Chempo Phunshok Rigzing who was a disciple of the famous Tibetan saint, Padmasambhava. One of the most important festivals celebrated as Tashiding Monastery is the Bumchu Festival which is held annually in January or February. It is a very important spiritual and cultural site in Sikkim. The monastery is known for its beautiful architecture, intricate murals and ancient scriptures. It is also home to many precious artifacts and relics of the Buddhist faith.

  1. Dubdi Monastery

This Buddhist monastery located near the town of Yuksom in West Sikkim. It is also known as the Hermit’s Cell after the small retreat house that was built nearby in the 18th century. Built in 1701 and is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. Since the monastery is situated at the hilltop it can be reached by a short hike through a forested trail. The hike takes about an hour and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It was established by Chogyal Namgyal the first king of Sikkim as a place for monks to study and meditate. It is said that the king had a vision of Guru Rimpoche, the famous Buddhist master and was instructed to build a monastery on this site.  

  1. Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Covering around 104 sq. km of area lies the beautiful Rhododendron sanctuary, situated at the altitude of 2000 to 3048 meters above sea level. The sanctuary is known for its diverse flora and fauna, which includes a wide variety of rhododendron species which blooms in various colours during the month of April and May. It also houses several oak, magnolia and primula and pine trees. It is also home to a variety of wildlife including the red panda, Himalayan black bear, leopard and several species of birds. The sanctuary can be accessed by road from a nearby town of Hilley, Dentam and Soreng. There are several viewpoints from where the visitors can enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the valleys and mountains. 

  1. Rabdentse Ruins

Located in the second capital of the former kingdom of Sikkim from 1670 to 1814. The capital city was destroyed by the invading of the Gurkha army and now only the ruins of the palace and the chortens are seen now. This monument has been declared as of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India. It was first established by the 2nd Chogyal (King) Tensung Namgyal. The ruins are a part of the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit. It is situated on a ridge overlooking the Pelling Valley and the most vantage point of this former capital is the beautiful view of the Mt. Kanchenjunga and the surrounding hills covered with blooming rhododendrons.

  1. Sanga Choeling Monastery

One of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim and is considered to be a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists. It was founded in the 17th century by Lama Lhastun Chempowho was one of the three lamas who were instrumental in the establishment of Buddhism in Sikkim. It is known for its architecture which is a mix of Tibetan and Sikkimese styles. The monastery is accessed by walking the steep hilly track which traverses through rich forest but it is considered to be a rewarding experience as one gets to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges along the way.
